FA Reject Appeals
Unfortunately for Hayden Mullins (and Luis Garcia) the FA rejected their appeals against their red card suspensions meaning both will miss the FA Cup final in a fortnight.
There is some good commentary about the ridiculousness of the decision here.
At face value it might seem like Garcia is a bigger loss to Liverpool than Mullins is to us but I don't agree. Mullins may not get too many headlines and public plaudits but he is a huge part of our midfield and it is his gritty dependability that allows NRC the licence to get forward. He would definitely be in my top 3 for hammer of the year.
I feel sorry for him having to sit out such a huge occasion because of a handbags at 5 paces nothing incident.

I totally disagree. It's up to the players to act appropriately on the pitch. The referee is the "arm of justice" if you like - he deals out what he has to deal out. Yes there is a grey area. But if he sees it as a red card offense, then he should give it a red card totally regardless of irrelevant, external affairs. And that is how the FA has acted.
I feel that in this case the bans should have been reduced to two (or even one) match, but that has nothing to do with the FA Cup final - but instead on the severity of the red cards, which were fairly soft. The fact is, the ref gave red cards. The FA upheld the ban. Obviously they felt that the red cards were reasonable and that the ban is reasonable - either that or all this "appealing for sensibility" has forced their hand to uphold the ban to keep up the appearance of impartiality.
Arguing that the FA should act out of compassion or sympathy is ridiculous. Arguing that they should act because the original "sentence" was unreasonably harsh is fair game.

Then why did the ref say that he had to give reds or he would have been in trouble with the FA?
That's hardly a vehement "it was a red card offence so I had no choice".
Not sure what you are on about if you then say you think it should have been commutted to yellows. That is exactly what I'm saying - Mullins is missing a cup final because he committed an offence that wasn't worthy of a red card.

I agree with that point. I was basically just saying that when it comes to the 3-match ban, we should not get caught up in the emotion of the ban encompassing an FA Cup final (as the guy at the Guardian said, in the link you posted - which triggered my response).
They should be allowed to play the final, but not BECAUSE it's the final, which is irrelevant. They should be allowed to play because, as you say, "Mullins is missing a cup final because he committed an offence that wasn't worthy of a red card." In other words, I'm pretty much with you, and with the guy from the Guardian, although I think the Guardian writer's reasoning is totally wrong.
PS. I do think it was a red card, I don't think it was a serious one, and a 3-match ban is quite harsh for a rather noddy response from Muggers.
