Sounds familiar but I can't remember this bloke. Is he any good? Can someone shed some light?

Alexey Smertin (Russian: Алексей Смертин) (born May 1, 1975 in Barnaul, USSR) is a Russian football player. He plays as a defensive midfielder for Dynamo Moscow, and was a captain of the Russian national team.
On the club level, Smertin has played for Dinamo Barnaul, Zarya Leninsk-Kuznetski, Uralan Elista, Lokomotiv Moscow, Girondins Bordeaux, and Chelsea.
Claudio Ranieri brought Smertin to Chelsea from Bordeaux in August 2003 for £3.45m before loaning him out to Portsmouth for the 2003-04 season. After some impressive performances at Fratton Park, most notably in Pompey's 1-0 victory over Manchester United, Smertin returned to London. However, Ranieri had now been succeeded by José Mourinho, who had made his own midfield signing in compatriot Tiago Mendes, adding to a midfield that already boasted Frank Lampard, Claude Makélélé, Geremi, and Scott Parker (who has since left Chelsea). Smertin only played a bit-part role for the team in 2004/2005 as Chelsea won the title.
He was ultimately deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and was loaned out to Charlton for the 2005-06 season. In January 2006 his contract with Chelsea was terminated, allowing him to return home and sign a four-year contract with Dynamo Moscow.
In an interview with the European Soccer Magazine in March 2006, Smertin insisted that he harboured no ill-feeling whatsoever towards Mourinho, and that he was grateful to have been able to participate in the celebrations at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea were crowned English Premier League champions. Smertin also insisted that his time in England was "a good experience", and that he now believes more firmly than before that the Premiership is the most challenging domestic competition in world football.
Smertin has been capped over 40 times for Russia, including the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004. He was made captain in June 2004.
Although often named by the media as Alexei Smertin, Smertin prefers the spelling with a y as appearing in his anglicized passport.[citation needed]

I remember him signing for Chelsea just after Abramobitch bought them. Like Joe Cole, he was going to be loaned straight out but unlike JC he actually did go straight out. I'm surprised he doesn't harbour any grudges as I felt he was shafted, but there you go.
He's a good player, but not great - although IMO he could become very good. He's very experienced.
Struggling West Ham signing a player born on May Day? Is that ironic?

Alexei Smertin played on loan at Charlton and also played on and off for Chelsea when they first won the league under Moureen.
Strange signing. Talk about only signing who you know.
English football is good at regurgitating the same players and managers, hoping they suddenly come good. Fuck I hope he comes good.

As you implied Anon, Curbs obviously is familiar with his game from Charlton days, so I guess in the manager we trust. You can only assume that Curbs has a definite role for this bloke to play. If Curbs knows the bloke doesn't sound like a gamble as opposed to sound logic. I hope???? There's that blind faith again, what can you do?

I don't think this guy will play a huge role for us.
Also Reo-Coker has been told to hand in his Transfer request in 24 hours if he wants to leave Upton Park, as been indicated by his agent.
He can fuck off

Reo-Coker's Cup absence fuels transfer speculation
Nigel Reo-Coker looks likely to be left out of the West Ham team for today's FA Cup tie at home to Brighton, fuelling speculation that the wanker will be sold this month. There will be no shortage of clubs interested in buying the 22-year-old, with Everton among his established admirers.

Said a while back the NRC was looking like it was going to be another Ince-gate. If he stays he needs to improve like no other, if he goes, he can eat shit and die.

vertically challenged.

Death is beautiful but Wright-Phillips means life
"I get a kind of giddy adolescent thrill during periods of intense transfer activity, like a pre-prom frisson in an American teen romcom. "Ooh, did Chad invite you to the prom?" "Are you wearing that peach frock?" "Did you hear Luis Boa Morte has signed for West Ham?" 'Tis a time of transition and hope renewed."

WE WON! Incredible! :p
3-0
Mullins getting his 3rd of the season in injury time.
Even more incredible, Roy Carrol kept a clean sheet!

Finally Curbs has put Cole and Tevez together. It worked!!
Boa was pretty instrumental in the game and it was great to see the team we had rather than the old skankass team that doesn't work in the premiership.
True Brighton are a league 1 outfit, but we did get rodgered in the Carling cup by Chesterfield. The result is just what the doctor ordered. Heart and mental fortitude intact.
Who wore the armband (missed it)?
